After Desperado, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino teamed up in this bizarre movie of literally two halves (road-kill a la Natural Born Killers, vampiric siege a la Night of the Living Dead ) which is trashy, vulgar, in-your-face knowing fun. Tarantino and George Clooney are Seth and Richard Gecko, on the run to Mexico after a very bloody crime spree.
After Richard needlessly murders one hostage, the pair creep aboard the mobile home of the Rev Jacob Fuller (Harvey Keitel), who is looking for a new life with his two children after the death of his wife, and force him to take them over the border. The pair's destination is the Titty Twister, the raunchiest bar on Earth where anything goes, but as the sultry Salma Hayek completes her erotic snake dance by turning into a hideous monster, the blood feast starts and both the criminals and the hostages are forced to fight for their lives, ending up retreating to a small room from where they plan their final stand.
This film is widely regarded as the one that gave Clooney cred after a series of mis-starts in feature films. He is commanding in the central role of the film, holding his own with Keitel, who even seems a little subdued while Tarantino is suitably straightfaced as the demented, psychotic killer. The special effects by Kurtzman, Nicotero and Berger EFX are a treat.
